This is often undertaken to determine either the physical characteristics of the bed material or the nature and distribution of the benthic biota.
Depending on the requirements, the collected samples may be either analysed for particle size distribution (PSD) at the WES laboratory facility, or forwarded to a UKAS accredited labs for chemical or biotic analyses.
Water samples may also be collected and forwarded to a UKAS accredited labs for the purposes of determining the concentrations of benthic biota and/or water quality
parameters such as salinity, pH, BOD, Redox, nitrates etc.
Alternatively, they may be analysed for particle size distribution (PSD) at the WES laboratory facility to determine the true suspended sediment concentrations.
Other physical characteristics may also be determined such as total organic content by loss-on-ignition.
In addition to the types of water samplers commonly used throughout the industry, WES often utilise their unique multi-channel 'CB' water sampling array for this purpose (pictured above) which can collect samples at user-defined elevations through the water column.
